searching for the perfect IPA

topic posted Fri, September 28, 2007 - 2:01 AM by  Root
I've tried a few different recipes and I've experimented to a great extent but I still haven't gotten a batch that rivals my favorite microbrew IPAs. Specifically, I like the amazing aromas and flavors from Terminal Gravity, Centennial and Lagunitas I P A s. If anybody knows what I'm talking about and would share there IPA secrets, hints or recipes, I'd be most obliged. If you have found a particularly good finishing/ aroma hops, that may be the key i'm looking for. I bottle my latest batch tomorrow, this is the first time I've tried adding oak chips, maybe that's the key. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Root

My mouth is watering with all this talk. I've been brewing for a long time, but haven't dove into enough detail to track which were my favorite finishing hops. Warrior hops is one of my favs, but who doesn't like them?

I've got a brain fart right now, but I've got this awwwesssome pale ale recipe. Just right amount of ETOH, taste, and finishes with some dry hopping flavors. I make it like every 3 batch. Actually can't make enough of it. Let me see if I can find the recipe and look at the hops used for it.

    Cheers,
    s

thanks in advance for the recipe, Stray. I haven't tried warrior hops yet so I'll give that a go. My results from the batch mentioned above are very good. The oak chips definitely make a positive difference. I must admit I don't know what ETOH means.

stray, give out that pale ale recipe. i am currently working on pale ales...have come close to the perfect ale (for me), but i feel like it can get better, like i need more or less hops or perhaps different hops.

Not sure if you have tried this or not, but put one of those hop pellets in your cheek or somewhere in the mouth and drink a beer. Yummy. The beer gets a nice dry hop right in your mouth. I remember some pub that would serve the beer as it had a final press through a vial of fresh hops. Talk about a hop head's dream.

In answer to my own question, I've found that besides using a lot of hops, one key is an extra long boiling time for my bittering hops - a full 2 hours. This still doesn't help with aroma but the depth of bitterness and flavor that I was looking for comes out.
