Re: Blowing The Top Of Your Lock Out
Mon, June 19, 2006 - 8:14 AMWhen that happens to me, I sterilize a one gallon container and siphon off a little so it can froth without poppin the cork and exposing it to possible contamination. Those 6.5 gallon carboys are good for 5 gallon batches that might froth in excess. -

Re: Blowing The Top Of Your Lock Out
Sun, August 26, 2007 - 11:32 AMstuff happens ! Perhaps just a little hasty putting on the lock after the initial blowoff. Happy yeast, but is the fermentation lock still sanitary? Or full of brew?

Re: Blowing The Top Of Your Lock Out
Mon, August 27, 2007 - 1:52 PMYes - if you are brewing a highly active batch, might consider using a bucket lock instead of stopper-type water lock to protect against contamination should lock blow out. Bucket lock is basically plastic tubing: connected to stopper on one end and wound and taped into gallon bucket full of water on other.

Mon, August 27, 2007 - 11:07 PMLOL, I learned that on my first batch 14 years ago... your yeast took off like gang busters... use a blow off hose into champage bottle 1/2 full of water

Re: Blowing The Top Of Your Lock Out
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 3:51 PMBack in ~2000 I planned a batch of Russian Imperial Stout. It was a really high gravity recipe. I brewed a batch of a more sane stout one sunday and the imperial the next. When the Imperial was cooling after the boil I racked the first stout into the secondary, then I put the Imperial onto the trub from the first batch. Basically I had a 5 gallon yeast starter! The next day I went out of town for a week. When I got home I found the airlock about 10 feet away. The floor was sticky in a 5 foot radius and I had to get a ladder to clean the beer off the ceiling. Both stouts were great.

Re: Blowing The Top Of Your Lock Out
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 6:31 PMTrying to find the pic that I took with my camera phone. I was watching TV when I heard a low thump sound...didn't think anything of it. Checked on beer before bed in the closet and the foam had blown the lid off of a 7.5 gallon bucket (air lock also). The foam was billowing out everywhere. Was a wheat beer that ended up very "thin" tasting. I'll post the pic if I find it.
cheers,
