i started a Czech Pilsner and its finished its primary fermentation and been transfered to a secondary and going into a cool place for lagering. Question is how long? i've read it can be between 4 and 12 weeks. Thats a big time difference, how do i know when its finished?

Keep checking the final gravity. Pilsners start high and slowly come down. Keep it in a cool dark place and check it weekly. Hope this helps.

That depends on your recipe. You're checking the specific gravity to see when fermentation has stopped or slowed to a negligible amount. You'll see that the specific gravity will be lower each time you check it for a while then it will level off and stop falling - that means fermentation is done. I say four days with no noticeable change in specific gravity is a good stop time but you can make it a week to be sure.
